Dr Vassilis Aschonitis is a researcher at the Soil and Water Resources Institute of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization (ELGO-DIMITRA). He graduated from the School of Agriculture of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) with specialization in "Land reclamation, Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering" (2005). He holds a Master's degree in "Agricultural Engineering and Water Resources" (AUTH, 2007), a Master's degree in "Soil Science and Land Resources Management" (AUTH, 2010), a PhD in "Agricultural Engineering and Water Resources" (AUTH, 2012) and a PhD in "Environmental and Evolutionary Biology" (University of Ferrara, 2015). His research interests include: Analysis of physical and chemical properties of soil, water, plant tissues. Cycles of nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon and other macro- and micro-nutrients in soil. Determination of critical limits of soil quality and nutrients' status for the application of precision agriculture methods for fertilization of agricultural soils based on soil analysis, water cycle and climate. Environmental chemistry, soil/water pollution and remediation methods based on the Nitrates Directive 1991/676/EC and the Water Protection Directive (2000/60/EC). Development of mathematical models to describe input-output, chemical and biochemical processes in agricultural soils and natural terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Ecosystem services of soil and water resources. He has participated in 15 international and national research projects. He has published more than 70 papers in international SCI journals and more than 80 papers in proceedings of scientific conferences. He is Editor in the international scientific journal PLOS one.
