Academic Profiles
Dr. Vasileios Aschonitis has graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), specializing in Land Reclamation, Soil Science & Agricultural Engineering. He holds two Master's degrees in Agricultural Engineering & Water Resources and in Soil Science and Soil Resources Management obtained from the Faculty of Agriculture of A.U.Th. He also holds two Doctoral degrees in Agricultural Engineering & Water Resources (Faculty of Agriculture, A.U.Th.) and Environmental Biology (University of Ferrara, Italy). His research fields include: analysis of physical and chemical properties of soil, water, and plant tissues; nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon, and other macro- and micro-nutrient cycles in soil; assessment of soil quality based on the thresholds of physical, chemical, and biological parameters set by the European Soil Monitoring Law; development of precision agriculture methods for soil fertilization based on soil analysis and irrigation based on climate; environmental chemistry, soil/water pollution assessment and remediation methods according to the Nitrates Directive (1991/676/EC) and the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC); development of mathematical models describing inflows/outflows and chemical/biochemical processes in agricultural soils as well as in natural terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems; ecosystem services of soil-water resources. He is Editor of the scientific journal PLOS One and Guest Editor for journals published by MDPI. He participates in committees of Master's and Doctoral theses of A.U.Th. and I.H.U. universities.
