LABORATORY OF SOIL PHYSICAL & HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES

The Laboratory of Soil Physical and Hydraulic Properties aims at quantifying soil hydraulic behavior, characterizing its structural features, and assessing the impacts of natural and human-induced factors on its physical and hydraulic properties, as well as how these influence agricultural production and environmental sustainability. The laboratory’s analytical measurements and experimental applications are designed to improve water resources management, enhance soil health, and mitigate soil degradation caused by factors such as compaction, salinization, erosion, and others. The laboratory’s research also includes modeling of soil physical processes to support management policies and practices that improve the sustainability of ecosystems and water resources while reducing the impacts of climate change and variability.

  • Soil particle size distribution
  • Bulk density
  • Soil moisture
  • Soil-Water retention curve (Field capacity, Permanent Wilting point, Available water)
  • Porosity attributes (Pore size distribution)
  • Saturated and Unsaturated hydraulic conductivity
  • Water potential of soil and leaves up to 300 MPa
  • Infiltration measurements
  • Aggregates’ size distribution and stability
  • Image analysis of soil surface/profile and aggregates
  • Modelling of soil physical/hydraulic properties and development of pedotransfer functions.
  • Modelling water flow and soil moisture dynamics.
  • Developing integrated soil moisture monitoring and irrigation programs.
  • Evaluation of soil amendments and agricultural practices’ effects on soil physical/hydraulic properties.
  • Experimentation and modelling of water-stress tolerance and crop performance under various soil-water regimes.
  • Evaluation and calibration of field sensors using laboratory methods.
