Ο Δρ Βασίλειος Ασχονίτης είναι εντεταλμένος ερευνητής στο Ινστιτούτο Εδαφοϋδατικών Πόρων του Ελληνικού Γεωργικού Οργανισμού (ΕΛΓΟ-ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ). Είναι απόφοιτος Γεωπονίας του Α.Π.Θ. με ειδίκευση "Εγγείων Βελτιώσεων, Εδαφολογίας και Γεωργικής Μηχανικής" (ΑΠΘ, 2005). Είναι κάτοχος Μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου "Γεωργικής Μηχανικής και Υδατικών Πόρων" (ΑΠΘ, 2007), Μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου "Εδαφολογίας και Διαχείρισης Εδαφικών Πόρων" (ΑΠΘ, 2010), Διδακτορικού Τίτλου "Γεωργικής Μηχανικής και Υδατικών Πόρων" (ΑΠΘ, 2012) και Διδακτορικού Τίτλου "Περιβαλλοντικής και Εξελικτικής Βιολογίας" (Πανεπιστήμιο της Ferrara, 2015). Τα ερευνητικά του αντικείμενα περιλαμβάνουν: Ανάλυση φυσικών και χημικών ιδιοτήτων εδάφους, νερού, φυτικών ιστών. Κύκλος του αζώτου, φωσφόρου, άνθρακα και λοιπών μακρο- και μικρο- θρεπτικών στο έδαφος. Καθορισμός κρίσιμων ορίων ποιοτικής και θρεπτικής κατάστασης εδάφους για την εφαρμογή μεθόδων γεωργίας ακριβείας εισροών λίπανσης σε γεωργικά εδάφη με βάση την εδαφοανάλυση, τον κύκλο του νερού και το κλίμα. Περιβαλλοντική χημεία, ρύπανση εδαφών/υδάτων και μέθοδοι αντιμετώπισης με βάση τις οδηγίες για τη νιτρορύπανση 1991/676/EC και την οδηγία για την προστασία των υδάτων (2000/60/EC). Ανάπτυξη μαθηματικών μοντέλων περιγραφής εισροών-εκροών, χημικών και βιοχημικών διεργασιών σε γεωργικά εδάφη καθώς και σε φυσικά χερσαία και υδάτινα οικοσυστήματα. Οικοσυστημικές υπηρεσίες εδαφοϋδατικών πόρων. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε 15 διεθνή και εθνικά ερευνητικά προγράμματα. Έχει δημοσιεύσει πάνω από 70 εργασίες σε διεθνή SCI επιστημονικά περιοδικά και πάνω από 80 εργασίες σε πρακτικά επιστημονικών συνεδρίων. Είναι Editor στο διεθνές επιστημονικό περιοδικό PLOS one.
