The Accredited Laboratory of Physicochemical Analyses of Soils, Plant Tissues and Water, operating in accordance with ELOT EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017, supports sustainable agriculture, environmental protection, the transition towards a circular economy, the National Water Monitoring Network, and the sustainable use and reuse of water resources.
The laboratory specializes in the physicochemical analysis and assessment of soils and waters, environmental monitoring and crop nutrition, while also serving as a research hub for the study of microplastics in soil, plant tissues and aquatic environments. Special emphasis is placed on:
- the assessment of agricultural and environmental by-products (compost, treated sewage sludge, olive mill wastewater, etc.) with the aim of their safe and efficient reuse,
- resource and nutrient recovery within the framework of the circular economy,
- the support of rational irrigation management and optimization of water resources use based on scientific evidence and laboratory measurements,
- the development and evaluation of nature-based solutions (NBS) for improving soil and water quality and
enhancing the resilience of agroecosystems, - and the integration of research with agricultural production and environmental policy, contributing to the design of sustainable agro-environmental strategies.
- Soils: Soil sampling according to standardized protocols, pH, electrical conductivity and salinity
(EC), organic matter, total and active CaCO₃, soil texture, total and available nitrogen, available
phosphorus (P-Olsen), available concentrations of macronutrients, trace elements and heavy
metals, total phenols, cation exchange capacity (CEC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), exchangeable
sodium percentage (ESP), microplastics, evaluation for the remediation of problematic soils,
fertilization advisory assessment, suitability evaluation for crop establishment, undisturbed soil
sampling and soil physical properties. - Plant tissues: Macronutrients and micronutrients, heavy metals, total phenols and microplastics,
including evaluation of nutrient deficiencies. - Water: Sampling according to standardized protocols, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity,
hardness, major ions, organic carbon, BOD₅, COD, total, dissolved and suspended solids, nutrients,
trace elements and heavy metals, total phenols, microplastics, irrigation water suitability
assessment. - Microplastics in soil, plant tissues, sludge and water: Sampling, isolation, quantification,
morphological and chemical characterization using advanced analytical techniques such as LDIR
and FTIR-Spectroscopy
- Rational management and restoration of soil and water resources.
- Environmental monitoring of soil and water in agricultural and urban environments.
- Development and application of soil fertility and fertilization management models.
- Development of nutrient and pollutant transport models in soils.
- Study of the transport and fate of microplastics in agroecosystems.
- Investigation of microplastics interaction with heavy metals and organic pollutants.
- Support of circular economy applications through the assessment of recycled and reused
materials (sewage sludge, compost, treated wastewater, etc.). - Development of surface and groundwater quality monitoring infrastructures, including
meteorological monitoring. - Development and application of hydrological models.
- Evaluation and calibration of field water quality sensors using laboratory measurements.
- Support of the National Water Monitoring Network, including the determination of priority and emerging substances in surface waters.
